Welcome to the MassaBerry Building!

The MassaBerry Building is located in Downtown Sturgis, SD. The building is only a few blocks away from gorgeous hiking and biking trails in the black hills. In the building, we have a local farm-to-table coffee shop, Rented office spaces, a climbing gym, a group exercise room, and hopefully coming soon a daycare. Sturgis is a town known for the Sturgis motorcycle rally which takes place one week out of the year, but we know it is more than just one week out of the year… Sturgis is a year round community. We are excited to welcome the community back to the MassaBerry Building!!

This little letter is to help introduce ourselves to Sturgis and the surrounding area.

The origination of BrewBerry Bistro started in a small hacking company. I know this sounds strange but hear me out…

Many years ago, in 2008, in the basement of a cabin off Boulder Canyon, an information security company was started. Black Hills Information Security was the name because the plan was to do computer security work around the Black Hills area. But unfortunately, at the start, it had trouble getting clients locally. Of course, this makes sense!! Some would say “how could any South Dakota Company be any good at anything like hacking?” Because of course, “all South Dakotan are ranchers or work in tourism” right? This belief was so ingrained that one time the founder of BHIS had a speaking engagement offered to him in Sioux Falls. The place he was planned to speak at found out he was from South Dakota and knowing nothing else about him, not even his name, responded, “no we don’t want someone from South Dakota, we want someone good.”

Well, with hard work and lots and lots of travel, this little company grew and gained clients and employees around the United States and the rest of the world. The office in the basement eventually moved to an office in the incubation center on the South Dakota School of Mines Campus and then we added one in Spearfish. After growing out of both, we decided we needed a bigger building and found the old MassaBerry Building and decided to combine the Rapid and Spearfish offices here in Sturgis. So here we were with a 20,000 square ft building and although we had grown, we hadn’t grown that much!

Therefore, we needed to decide what to do with unused space in the building. We threw around a few ideas and came to a couple conclusions. First, with a 20’ ceiling, we needed a climbing wall. Second, (don’t hold this part against us) we missed our breakfasts and lunches at the coffee shops in Spearfish, so it only made sense that we needed a coffee shop with healthy food onsite for our employees here as well. We thought we would use the rest as a co-working space but as we talked to people it seemed there was a need for more traditional office space, so we opened most of the offices for rent and are keeping a few for the co-working spaces. We also had people contact us about having a place to do fitness classes, so we tore down a couple walls and turned the old meeting space into a small fitness classroom. So here we are right now, a computer security company, a fitness center, a bistro, a hair salon, a massage therapist, a contractor, and yoga & Zumba fitness classes together in the old MassaBerry Building.

All this, literally a few blocks from where one of the founders was born. During the rally no less!
